Veteran's Manor
Veterans’ Manor will be a 52 unit apartment building located at 35th and Wisconsin Avenue. In a close partnership The Center for Veterans Issues is working with Cardinal Capital Management to develop this underutilized and catalytic site. This four story building will have one bedroom homes of approximately 550 square feet each on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stories. Each resident will have a living room area, fully functional kitchen, either a fully handicapped accessible or partially accessible bathroom, and a large bedroom.
All of the above can be greatly enhanced with the addition of important energy efficient and generation technologies. The building footprint of 12,000 square feet and its four story height will allow for ample roof space for solar water heating and solar photovoltaic panels. These technologies can be utilized collectively or individually to provide some or all of the building’s consumed power, and it will demonstrate, on a prominent corner, that not only can Milwaukee be a leader in alternative energies, but that it can be done in an affordable housing scenario. The ground and soil consistency may also allow for the installation of geothermal cooling and heat pumps.
Center for Veterans Issues
Perhaps more important than the makeup of the apartments or the exterior look of the building are the extensive experience & services that CVI will bring to the residents. The “supportive services” that the Center for Veterans Issues has been providing for over 20 years, and will continue to provide to the veterans who reside at “Veterans Manor” include: Case Management support by a licensed Case Manager/Social Worker; Education, Training and Employment placement; Volunteer program – Veterans United for Community Service; Addiction therapy, Sobriety maintenance, Counseling; Referrals for mainstream resources such as: health and dental care, SSI/SSDI, Veterans Benefits, Food stamps, etc; Daily living assistance, and much more.
Individuals will also be assisted in maintaining their overall physical and mental independence and well-being with the availability of each of these on-site amenities: Fitness center complete with equipment; Owner-paid high-speed internet service – access benefits, stay connected to family; Library/Reading room; Community dining room; Community patio; Underground and surface parking for easy accessibility; Business/computer center; Media center room.
Update: On May 21st 2009 the Milwaukee County Board unanimously approved a CDBG-Recovery grant of $465,431 for the purchase of the land that Veterans Manor will be constructed on. This is a great victory for this project, Veterans and Milwaukee!
Update;
May 27th 2009. The City of Milwaukee has committed $550,000 in CDBG-Recovery grants to Veterans Manor. Another victory for Veterans, the City and County. Thank you to all City employees and representatives who helped make this happen.
